Anthony Davis Delaying His Extension To Open Up A Pathway For Giannis To Join The Lakers, Brian Windhorst Suspects

While it basically is already a given that Davis will re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers this year, the details of the contract and the contract signing itself are yet to materialize, thus leading every fan to puzzle about Davis’ future plans in his NBA career.

The delay in Davis’ extension could be attributed to the idea that Davis is weighing on his options to see if the Lakers could become competitive for long-term. One theory from Brian Windhorst however, points out that this delay is somehow related to Giannis Antetokounmpo’s impending free agency in 2021.

In an interview on ESPN, Windhorst suggested that Davis may possibly be waiting for Giannis to decide about his supermax contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks first. So incase Giannis doesn’t re-sign and hit free agency next summer, Davis could sign a 1+1 deal that will allow him to opt out next year, therefore giving the Lakers the financial flexibility to sign the polarizing Bucks superstar.
