Byron Scott Fulfills Promise To Late Mother, Finishes College 37 Years After Leaving Early For NBA Career
In his 16-year long NBA coaching career, Byron Scott coached the New Jersey Nets, New Orleans Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.
In 2017, Scott retired from coaching and if you take a look at the teams he’s got to coach over the course of his career, you recognize that Scott had the opportunity to coach plenty of NBA All Stars such as Kenyon Martin, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, David West, Kyrie Irving and Kobe Bryant.
Now, three years after retiring, and 37 years after leaving college early due to being drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, Scott obtained his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Arizona State. He has been working for the past year-and-a-half to complete his coursework, also because it was something he promised his late mother. Congrats coach!
“It was a promise I made a while back to my mother. She passed a few years ago, and that thought came back to my mind that I had promised to get my degree. I wanted to keep that promise. I just said I have to do this.”
