Derrick Rose’s Adidas Contract Is Insane

Earlier this season, Derrick Rose needed some time away from the team, to deal with his increasing frustration about his constant injury problems. Rose wasn’t even sure that he wants to continue playing.

If Rose had decided to retire, he would have left over $80 million of Adidas endorsement money on the table. Some people thought that this was the main reason in Derrick Rose’s decision to come back.

But Rose insisted that his agreement with Adidas had nothing to do with his decision to continue playing.

“Man, I don’t care about — not to be rude — I don’t care about no f***ing money,” Rose told reporters, via ESPN.com’s Dave McMenamin. “It’s not about that. I’ve saved up enough money. It’s not about that. If I wanted to leave, I would have left. Like I said, coming back here, starting with rehab that’s my first step. Keeping it simple and just giving my team support and then I’ll see what I see off the court.”

But if we take a closer look into the contract details, you can see why people made these allegations. Sports Illustrated has a copy of Rose’s 40-page Adidas deal, and you can see that the contract not only benefits Rose himself, but also his friends and family.

“The deal called for annual retainers of $12 million per season from 2012–13 until ’16–17. (This season, he is entitled to $11 million.) It also included annual royalties of up to $6.25 million per year, as much as $4.8 million in annual appearance fees and use of a private plane.

Reggie Rose, Derrick’s older brother, is paid between $250,000 and $300,000 annually as a consultant. Randall Hampton, Rose’s best friend since sixth grade and his assistant, is paid between $50,000 and $75,000 annually for ‘consulting’ services. Adidas also pledged to contribute $150,000 annually to the AAU team of Rose’s choice.”

Since Rose was only making $2.1 million during his time with the Cavs (he made $21 million with the Knicks last season), this contract has become more valuable for D-Rose. For Adidas, it has become a nightmare.
