Gregg Popovich Blasts President Donald Trump: “If Trump Had A Brain… He Would Come Out And Say Something To Unify The People”

In the wake of George Floyd’s death, tensions continue to heighten with law enforcement authorities clashing with protestors in multiple cities throughout the U.S. Amid these protests, numerous NBA personalities have used their platform to put out statements condemning racism, police brutality and other social injustice issues. A lot of them also have never shied away from criticizing those who are in power, especially the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

One of them is San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich who frequently shows displeasure with how the POTUS is handling these issues. Speaking to Dave Zirin of The Nation, Popovich criticized Trump’s leadership capabilities and condemned him for being unable to unify the people.

“If Trump had a brain, even if it was 99 percent cynical, he would come out and say something to unify people. But he doesn’t care about bringing people together. Even now. That’s how deranged he is. It’s all about him. It’s all about what benefits him personally. It’s never about the greater good. And that’s all he’s ever been. It’s so clear what needs to be done. We need a president to come out and say simply that ‘black lives matter.’ Just say those three words. But he won’t and he can’t. He can’t because it’s more important to him to mollify the small group of followers who validate his insanity.”

President Trump has made some controversial statements ever since protests sparked across the country. On Twitter, Trump labeled the protesters as ‘thugs’ and warned them by using the phrase “when the looting starts, the shooting starts”. Moreover, the President recently suggested that the touting job numbers have made it a ‘great day’ for the late George Floyd, whom he hoped was ‘looking down’ to see it.

The unlawful killing of Floyd has led to a massive outcry and drove many NBA personalities to speak out. Coach Pop joined other NBA coaches such as Steve Kerr, Doc Rivers and Dwane Casey who continue to express their opinions about political and societal issues.
