Lakers Coach Darvin Ham Explains Using A 5-Guard Lineup Late In The Game Against The Dallas Mavericks

The Los Angeles Lakers have had some low expectations coming into this season. Still, it’s been staggering to see just how the Lakers are still underachieving, as the team dropped to 13-20 record so far this season.

While everyone watching the Los Angeles Lakers is wise enough to realize the poor roster construction, it doesn’t help that Lakers head coach Darvin Ham still insists on going undersized, playing at least three guards on the court at the same time.

On Christmas day against the Dallas Mavericks, Ham took his guard-heavy lineup to the next level and tried to roll with a 5-guard lineup of Russell Westbrook, Dennis Schroder, Austin Reaves, Patrick Beverley and Lonnie Walker at one point during the fourth quarter.

The 5-guard lineup didn’t last long and was adjusted after giving up two dunks and two offensive rebounds to Mavericks big man Christian Wood. In a post-game interview, Ham then explained why he used such an undersized lineup.

Darvin on using a 5-guard lineup late: “Just trying to get more possessions in the game. … Any of those guys can get the defensive rebound and push it. … It’s just trying to play faster at the end of the day.”
