LeBron James Reveals How Saving Carmelo Anthony’s Life Was From His Perspective

Back in 2003, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony were drafted with the first and third picks in the NBA Draft. The two had been friends long before their NBA days and remained good friends throughout their respective NBA careers. Alongside Kyle Korver, the two are the only players of their class to still play in the league today.

But did you know that LeBron James once saved Carmelo Anthony’s life?

We first heard of it in an Instagram live session on Dwyane Wade’s channel during quarantine. Melo explained how he, while vacationing together in the Caribbean, jumped off the boat during a tour to take a better look at the island.  The strong current had him float off into the middle of the ocean, with the boat getting far, far away.

But just as Anthony thought that he was about to drown, LeBron jumped off the boat and brought him back with one arm, in true MacGyver style.

“LeBron jumps off the boat like MacGyver. He was swimming with one arm and bringing me back with the other. LeBron I appreciate you. You saved my life that day.”

Ahead of their first round series against each other, James now shared the story from his point of view.

Per ESPN:

“I just knew that he was not back in the boat with the rest of us, so I went out looking for him. And through the grace of God and through strength and not being afraid of the water, I was able to help him back to the boat. It was the only thing that was on my mind at that point and time, was getting my brother back to the boat.”
