Lou Williams Doesn’t Agree With Sixth Man Of The Year Being Named After John Havlicek: “He Ain’t Nobody Sixth Man”

The NBA is renaming its major individual trophies after some of the best players to ever play in league history. The Sixth Man of the Year award was one of the renamed trophies, and it will now be called The John Havlicek Trophy.

The trophy bears the name of Boston Celtics legend John “Hondo” Havlicek who is often considered as the original sixth man. Starting his career with the Celtics, Havlicek came off the bench for the first seven years of his NBA career and earned four All-Star appearances in that role before becoming a starter later in his career.

Most fans and pundits don’t seem to have an issue with the award being named after Havlicek except for three-time 6MOY winner Lou Williams. Taking his thoughts on Twitter, Williams had a back-and-forth exchange with a fan who thinks Hondo deserved the recognition.

Fan: “Lou, you are a hooper but Hondo was making all nba teams off the bench for the most dominate dynasty (weaker era) in nba history. It’s only right he got the award title.”

Williams: “Hondo averaged 47.2 min at a time lol. He ain’t nobody sixth man. He was a superstar”

Fan: “He is the clear best choice for the award title.”

Williams: “No, he’s a bonafide superstar Clint. Lol”

Fan: “A superstar who came off the bench for the first few years and made 6th man into a thing. The award name that really doesn’t make sense to me is Mikan for MIP. Like wasn’t he always good? I’d rather see like Mcgrady for MIP.”

Williams: “He averaged 47.2 min a game one year. What bench did he really come off of? Lol . Times were definitely different then though. And I also agree with MIP”
