The ‘Mathematician’ Martell Webster Retires From Basketball
On September 25, Webster was added to the New Orleans Pelicans’ training camp roster. Being a 38.2% career three point shooter, with the Pelicans in need of some shooting power, he would have had a legitimate chance to make their roster. But, five days later, Webster decided to leave training camp and retire from basketball.
Webster was the 6th pick of the 2006 NBA draft, becoming one of the last ever high school players to be chosen in an NBA draft, but wasn’t able to live up to having been a lottery pick. Still, he’s had a pretty decent career with stops in Portland, Minnesota and Washignton.
One of his most memorable NBA moments gave him the nickname “The Mathematician”. Playing against the Denver Nuggets, with 4.9 seconds of overtime left and his team down by 3 points, Martell Webster forgot how to count and went in for a dunk!
