Shane Battier arrived on the Houston Rockets in the 2006-07 NBA season. From there, he had the chance to play with one of the league’s most renowned superstars in Tracy McGrady. The two players spent four seasons together as teammates before McGrady was later traded to the New York Knicks.

McGrady averaged 22.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game on 42.0% shooting from the field in six seasons with the Rockets. Though McGrady was always known for his scoring ability, he also impressed as a very respectable passer with a career-high of 6.5 assists per game.

Battier was well-aware of McGrady’s talent, but it wasn’t until he played with him that he realized just how good the former Rockets star was as a passer. Appearing in an interview, Battier heaped high praise on McGrady, calling his former teammate as the best passer he’s ever played with. 

“T-Mac was an absolute handful, so aggressive. He was a monster, especially early in his career before his injuries. When I got to Houston, what struck me about T-Mac was that he’s probably the best passer I ever played with. 

He was a great pitcher in high school, he saw everything. Everything. As a shooter, you just want the ball in the pocket. Hit me in my chest and I’m gonna give you an assist and T-Mac put that on the money every single time. Super underrated and a willing passer, for as great of a scorer he was, he was just an absolute handful as a basketball player.”
