The Philadelphia 76ers have hired Nick Nurse as their new head coach, the team announced on Monday. Nurse, who was fired by the Toronto Raptors last month, replaces Doc Rivers, who was fired by the Sixers after the team’s loss to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Nurse, a former NBA Coach of the Year, led the Raptors to their first NBA championship in 2019, and he has a career record of 390-227.

While the Sixers are coming off a season in which they finished with the third-best record in the Eastern Conference, led by Joel Embiid, who won his first MVP award this season, they also have not advanced past the second round of the playoffs since 2001.

Nurse is known for his creativity and in-game adjustments, something that Rivers has definitely had his problems with at times.

But while the hiring of Nurse is a big win for the Sixers, NBA Twitter all made the same joke, saying it’s a downgrade, even if only name-wise…
